Organisation Details

Climate Action Network- Tanzania is a Non-Governmental and not for profit organization, registered under Tanzania Non-Governmental Organizations Act, (2002) with registration number 00NGO/00005074 in November, 2011. The organization operates in Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar with its head quarter in Dar Es Salaam.

CAN Tanzania is a think and do tank and a member based organisation with over 50 members nationwide engaging in research, advocacy and on-ground project implementation(practice).

The organisation envisions to realise a socio-economically powerful and climate resilient community that takes actions to mitigate climate change impacts whilst exploring natural resources wisely. 

The organisation aims to grow and strengthen a transformational national network of actors that actively collaborates to protect, manage, and restore ecosystem health, promote environmental stewardship, act on climate change, and support the wise use of natural resources for the benefit of citizens and the ecosystems.

It has a diverse target groups ranging from international actors, national actors such as government bodies and local actors which are communities, Civil societies, and Private Sectors.

Focus Area(s) of Work

  1. Renewable Energy - The organisation advocates for expansion of renewable energy in Tanzania policy frameworks that have enabled expansion of emission target in Nationally Determined Contribution and on-going formulation of National Renewable Energy Strategy and Roadmap. Furthermore, the organisation implements on-ground renewable energy projects such as the use solar powered irrigation in increasing agricultural production in Hai District which is a semi-arid region.
  2. Climate Services - The organisation provides climate services to small holder fisherfolks, pastoralists and farmers communities to inform their livelihood actions in the face of climate change. Furthermore, the organisation is currently working towards enabling integration of climate services within local government institutional setup.
  3. Intersection of Health and Climate Change - The organisation works with the Tanzania Ministry of Health in enabling it better to prepare and integrate climate change aspects within the on-going revision of National Health Adaptation Plan.
  4. Intersection of Education and Climate Change - The organization works with other CSOs in advocating for better inclusion and addressing of climate change aspects within the educational curriculum of primary and secondary level.
  5. Capacity Building - The organisation engages in awareness raising and capacity building of CSOs and community towards mitigating climate change and conducting joint advocacy in multiple issues, mostly being renewable energy and climate services. The organisation has hosted multiple trainings, published articles and engaged in joint advocacy with number of local and national CSOs towards shared outcomes.
  6. Sustainable Agriculture - The organisation works with communities to build their capacity in practicing sustainable agriculture and utilize climate services to increase their resilience and productivity.
  7. Forestry - The organisation works with community through use of Nature based Solution (NbS) in reforesting forest and woodland ecosystems in the Eastern Arc Mountains and the Coastal Forest Belt including mangroves.
  8. Environment - The organisation engages in the co-development of relevant environmental policies among which are the Tanzania National Determined Contribution 2022, National Climate Change response strategy 2022 and the on-going revision of Zanzibar Environmental Policy 2013 and Zanzibar climate change strategy.

Method(s) Used to Achieve Objectives

  1. Use of Evidence Based Approach in advocacy interventions.
  2. Use of joint advocacy whereby the organisation works mainly through two CSO coalitions which are focused on renewable energy and climate services.
  3. Use of participatory approaches in both in advocacy and community interventions.
  4. Capacity building of its partners and likeminded institutions
  5. Working with its network members in on-ground project implementations and exchange of information/data
  6. Collaboration and partnership with different organisations in undertaking initiatives.
  7. Facilitating the participation and inclusion of civil societies in co-development process.

Project(s)

Aligning Climate Resilience, Sustainable Development, and Poverty Reduction project -This project aims  at  contributing  to the development of climate resilience and poverty reduction in Tanzania through expansion of role of renewable energy as an economic enable, expansion use of climate services and capacity building of CSO’s network.

Strengthening the Contribution of Local Actors for a Climate Resilient Society in Zanzibar project - This aims to develop climate resilience in Zanzibar through co-developing Zanzibar political frameworks (Zanzibar Climate Change Strategy and/or Zanzibar Environment Policy strategies) and improving climate change adaptation practices in the selected project areas by 2025.

Integrating Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights into Climate Change policies and Strategies in Tanzania (INSECT) project - The project aims at strengthening the capacity of the Ministry of Health to plan and integrate climate change in its health policies and strategies (i.e reflected and included in multi-sectoral programming under National Adaptation Plans and Health National Adaption Plan) as well as support their implementation as a means to enhance vulnerable communities especially women, youth and people with disability to adapt to the effects of climate change.

Promoting participatory and ambitious NDC implementation through nature-based solutions in urban, rural, and coastal landscapes of Tanzania (PRO-NDC-ACT) project - The project intends to promote community-led reforestation activities and ambitious NDC implementation through NBS at Same and Pangani Districts.
