Organisation Details

The Desert Research Foundation of Namibia (DRFN) was established in 1990, it has more than 30 years of experience in the application, facilitation and dissemination of research findings and experiences to benefit decision-making and the sustainable management of Namibia’s environment.

Vision: A Namibia in which people manage the environment for sustainable livelihoods

Purpose: To enhance decision-making for sustainable development

The Centre of our existence is the protection and management of the environment. DRFN renders livelihoods support to vulnerable communities across Namibia.

Focus Area(s)

Our areas of focus are natural resources and environmental management, especially sustainable land management and enhancement of livelihoods, water, and sanitation, renewable energy and Climate Change. The DRFN also supports a broad range of decision- makers, from local communities and traditional authorities to the government and in the private sector, through capacity development and dissemination of scientific and environment management.

The approach: Most programmes consist of three components:

  1. Through building capacity in community organization and leadership skills is strengthened so that local people can take responsibility for development.
  2. Joint action planning with regional stakeholders is organized through Forums for Integrated Resource Management (FIRMs)
  3. Support activities that aim at improving food security in the communities.

Method(s) Used to Achieve Objectives

  • Interaction and involvement with rural communities.
  • Assessment of problems on the ground to assesses the needs of the of the communities in their environment.

Project(s)

Currently, DRFN is working on a project to develop the Bio Cultural Protocol of the SAN communities in Omaheke and Otjozondjupa Regions and also to document the Indigenous Knowledge System of the San communities.
