Latin America

The regional network in Latin America is currently working in the Amazon Basin, the world’s largest and most climatically significant rainforest. The Amazon Basin is facing unprecedented environmental challenges. In response, Bolivia and Colombia joined forces to strengthen local political advocacy by supporting grassroots organisations in remote rural areas. This initiative will empower indigenous communities, youth leaders, and local organisations to actively participate in shaping environmental policies that protect the region's vital ecosystems.

A Collective Approach to Environmental Policy in Bolivia

In Bolivia, the project is focused on the northern regions of La Paz, where indigenous communities and local stakeholders are playing a pivotal role in environmental conservation efforts. The project’s primary goal is to foster active participation in the formulation of public environmental policies. By working closely with municipal authorities, the project ensures that indigenous groups and local organisations are not only included in policy discussions but are also given a platform to influence decisions that directly impact their land and way of life.

Activities include a series of meetings and collaborative workshops where community leaders, environmental organisations, and local government officials come together to discuss key issues such as deforestation, climate change, and biodiversity loss. By building these strong partnerships, the project aims to create a sustainable and inclusive model for environmental governance.

Supporting Indigenous Youth Leadership in Colombia

In Colombia, the project takes a different but complementary path, focusing on empowering indigenous youth. As the next generation of environmental leaders, young indigenous people are crucial to the long-term sustainability of the Amazon rainforest. This part of the initiative will provide training in climate change adaptation, biodiversity protection, and environmental advocacy, offering a platform for young leaders to strengthen their leadership skills.

Workshops and knowledge exchange sessions give indigenous youth the tools and expertise they need to advocate for their communities and the environment. They also had the opportunity to participate in high-level international events such as the UN Biodiversity Conference CBD COP16 in Cali and its Pre-COP in Nuquí.

Vision and Goals

The ultimate goal is to empower indigenous communities in the Amazon Basin to take a leading role in environmental advocacy and policymaking. By equipping local organisations and young leaders with the skills, knowledge, and networks necessary for meaningful participation in global forums, empowering powerful advocates for the planet’s future.
