1st WLI Asia-Oceania International Conference Highlights Eco-Education and Ecotourism Goods
The inaugural WLI Asia-Oceania International Conference, hosted at Diyasaru Park in Colombo, Sri Lanka, marked a significant gathering for wetland conservationists and educators from across the region. Organised by the Think Global Sustainability Network and Hanns Seidel Foundation Korea, in collaboration with partner organisation Eco Korea 사단법인 에코코리아, the event showcased a vibrant display of initiatives aimed at promoting environmental awareness and sustainable practices.
Dr. Choi, representing Hanns Seidel Foundation Korea, participated in the conference’s Asia-Oceania Regional Meeting of Wetland Link International (WLI), a renowned network dedicated to wetland conservation and education. The conference, held from June 17 to 21, facilitated knowledge exchange among members, emphasising the critical role of wetlands in biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.
One of the focal points of interest at the conference was eco-education and ecotourism goods, reflecting a growing global accentuation on sustainable tourism and environmental education. Participants engaged in discussions and presentations aimed at enhancing public understanding of wetland ecosystems and promoting responsible tourism practices.
Diyasaru Park, the venue for the conference, exemplifies these ideals by integrating urban wetlands into city development while preserving biodiversity. Extending across 60 acres in Colombo, the park serves as a sanctuary for diverse species, including globally threatened ones. It features educational facilities such as study centres, boardwalks, and laboratories for soil and water quality testing, offering visitors and researchers alike a unique opportunity to connect with nature amidst an urban landscape.
The conference not only highlighted the ecological importance of wetlands but also underscored the role of collaborative efforts in achieving sustainable development goals. With sessions facilitated by the Ramsar Regional Centre – East Asia and contributions from various wetland centres and conservationists, the event laid the groundwork for future initiatives aimed at preserving wetland ecosystems across Asia and Oceania.
As interest in environmental conservation continues to grow globally, conferences like the WLI Asia-Oceania International Conference serve as crucial platforms for fostering dialogue, sharing best practices, and forging partnerships to address the challenges facing wetland ecosystems today.
