COP15 in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

From July 23 to 31, 2025, the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands was held in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. Centred on the theme “Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future,” this year’s conference emphasised the essential role wetlands play in biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable development.

Wetlands are among the world’s most valuable ecosystems. They purify water, store carbon, mitigate floods, and support diverse forms of life, including migratory birds, fish, and amphibians. Despite their importance, wetlands are vanishing at an alarming rate due to unchecked development, pollution, and the impacts of climate change. Delegates from 172 countries participated in plenary sessions, workshops, and side events, sharing insights and strengthening global cooperation to protect wetland ecosystems.

HSF Korea also actively participated in COP15, engaging in discussions and collaborations that emphasised the importance of wetland conservation along the Flyways, including Central Asian Flyway - a key migratory route spanning from the Arctic Ocean to the Indian Ocean. These wetlands serve as vital stopover and breeding sites for millions of migratory birds, and their preservation is crucial for both biodiversity and international environmental cooperation.

HSF Korea reaffirmed its commitment to supporting transboundary conservation efforts, raising awareness, and promoting nature-based solutions in collaboration with experts and partenrs along the Flyway.

Highlights of COP15

  • Ramsar Regional Initiatives – South Africa RRI and Indo-Burma RRI and Platforms Launched: Introduced innovative mechanisms to enhance international cooperation, including improved financing tools and data-sharing networks among Ramsar Contracting Parties.
  •  Integration with Global Agendas: Positioned wetland conservation as a critical pillar in achieving global biodiversity targets and advancing the SDGs.
  • Strategic Focus Areas: Prioritized the development of sustainable funding strategies, climate adaptation measures, and the large-scale restoration of protected wetlands.
