Delegations Participate in UNFCCC COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan
Two delegations from the Hanns Seidel Foundation’s (HSF) Global Project for Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate Change (GMACC) had the opportunity of participating in the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Baku, Azerbaijan. The delegations included project partners from various regions within the GMACC initiative, each contributing their valuable insights and experiences in the global fight against climate change.
Delegation A and B: Key Dates and Objectives
Delegation A participated in the event from 11 to 17 November 2024, while Delegation B joined from 17 to 23 November 2024. The study trip provided a unique opportunity for GMACC partners to have their voices heard on the international stage, facilitating dialogue, networking, and collaboration on climate action.
HSF delegates, ready to engage in crucial climate discussions and actions
The primary aim of the study trip was to give HSF project partners a platform to actively participate in the international climate conversation, ensuring their perspectives and initiatives were part of the broader climate discourse. The delegation’s participation at COP29 helped strengthen the foundation for cross-regional and international collaboration, which is crucial for addressing the complex challenges posed by climate change.

A Special Acknowledgment to RSCN for Their Support
The significant participation of the HSF GMACC delegations was made possible through the generous support of the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) from Jordan. RSCN provided the majority of the necessary accreditation seats, which allowed a larger number of HSF partners to attend COP29. This collaboration highlights the power of partnerships in enabling broader representation and involvement in global climate dialogues.
Side Events at COP29: Showcasing HSF Initiatives
During their time at COP29, participants from both delegations were given the opportunity to speak at key side events, showcasing the important work being done by HSF and its partners worldwide.

Another significant event took place on 22 November 2024, led by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) of Jordan, under the title “Strengthening Civil Society-led Collaborative Climate Action Worldwide”, hosted at the SDG Pavilion in the Blue Zone. This side event emphasised the pivotal role of civil society in fostering collaborative climate action. It explored how various stakeholders, including local and regional organisations, can come together to address climate change through shared solutions and collective efforts.
Witnessing the Negotiations and Broader COP29 Activities
The study trip was not only a platform for showcasing HSF initiatives but also provided participants the opportunity to engage directly with the official negotiations of COP29. As observers, participants from the HSF delegations were able to attend critical sessions, including official UNFCCC side events, capacity-building hubs, and numerous events hosted by country delegations, NGOs, and other governmental organisations. These experiences offered valuable insights into the complex decision-making processes that shape global climate policy.

Strengthening Partnerships for Climate Action
A key takeaway from the experience was the importance of effective partnerships and collaborations for meaningful climate action. The events and interactions at COP29 reaffirmed that combating climate change requires a united effort from governments, civil society, NGOs, and private sectors. For the HSF delegations, these discussions underscored the need for inclusive and actionable climate solutions that bring together diverse voices and expertise.
Looking Ahead
The participation of the HSF GMACC delegations at COP29 was a significant step in amplifying the voices of those working on the ground to address climate change. The events, side discussions, and networking opportunities provided participants with the tools and inspiration to continue advancing the climate agenda in their respective regions.
By continuing to engage with international climate platforms like COP29, HSF and its partners aim to catalyse even more transformative action for a sustainable future.
