From Online Collaboration to Global Climate Advocacy: TH!NK GLOBAL at UNFCCC SB64

SB64 Delegation

From 8 to 12 June 2026, a delegation of the TH!NK GLOBAL Sustainability Network participated in the UNFCCC SB64 in Bonn, Germany. Representing partner organisations from Bolivia, Malaysia, and Lebanon, the delegates joined climate discussions, engaged with international stakeholders, and launched the TH!NK GLOBAL Position Paper during a dedicated press conference. The delegation brought together voices and experiences from different regions of the Global South to contribute to ongoing discussions on climate action, sustainability, and inclusive governance.

A Journey that Started Online

The delegation's participation in Bonn was the result of months of preparation and collaboration within the Global Project for Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate Change (GMACC).

Through a series of online meetings and exchanges, partners from Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), Latin America and Asia worked together to identify common priorities and develop joint policy recommendations.

This collaborative process culminated in the creation of the TH!NK GLOBAL Position Paper, reflecting regional experiences and practical recommendations on:

• Ending Plastic Pollution
• Protecting Biodiversity and Ecosystems
• Realising Carbon Neutrality
• Promoting Sustainable Food and Water Systems

The process itself was an important achievement, creating a space for dialogue, knowledge exchange, and joint advocacy across regions.

Introduction of Delegates

Expectations Before Bonn

Before travelling to Germany, delegates shared their expectations for SB64. They spoke about the importance of climate justice, food sovereignty, biodiversity protection, and ensuring that local communities remain at the centre of climate action.

For many participants, the conference represented an opportunity not only to better understand international climate negotiations but also to ensure that perspectives from the Global South are heard in global decision-making processes.

Delegates' Expectations

Bringing Global South Perspectives to SB64

Throughout the conference, delegates attended negotiation sessions, side events, networking meetings, and discussions with representatives from governments, international organisations, and civil society.

The experience offered valuable insights into how international climate negotiations function and highlighted the importance of civil society engagement in shaping climate policy.

For the delegates, SB64 was also an opportunity to strengthen relationships with organisations from other regions, exchange experiences, and explore opportunities for future collaboration.

Launching the Global South Position Paper

One of the key moments of the delegation's participation was the launch of the TH!NK GLOBAL  Position Paper during a press conference held on 10 June 2026 at SB64.

The event showcased recommendations developed through the collaborative GMACC process and highlighted the perspectives of civil society organisations from across the Global South.

The Position Paper calls for climate action that is equitable, community-led, and implementation-focused. It emphasises the importance of biodiversity protection, sustainable food and water systems, a just transition towards carbon neutrality, and effective measures to address plastic pollution.

The launch also formed part of a broader advocacy effort aimed at amplifying Global South voices within international climate discussions and on the road to COP31.

"I Need the World to Know"

As part of the delegation's advocacy campaign, participants shared a simple but powerful message:

"I need the world to know that..."

Their responses reflected many of the themes discussed throughout the conference and during the development of the Position Paper.

The delegates spoke about the need to move beyond polarisation, strengthen cooperation, prioritise food sovereignty, place communities at the centre of climate action, and ensure that climate justice and equity guide decision-making.

Together, these messages captured the spirit of the delegation and its commitment to amplifying voices from the Global South.

Reflections on the Journey

Following the conclusion of SB64, delegates reflected on their experiences—from the first online meetings and drafting sessions to presenting their perspectives in Bonn.

Many highlighted the value of learning more about international climate negotiations, collaborating with partners from different regions, and contributing to a shared advocacy effort.

They also emphasised that the experience was not only about participating in a conference but about building lasting partnerships, strengthening civil society engagement, and creating opportunities for continued collaboration.

While SB64 has concluded, the work continues.

The partnerships strengthened through this process, the recommendations outlined in the Position Paper, and the experiences gained in Bonn will continue to inform advocacy efforts in the months ahead.

As preparations for UNFCCC COP31 in Antalya begin, TH!NK GLOBAL and its partners remain committed to ensuring that Global South perspectives continue to shape international climate discussions.

The journey to Bonn may be over, but the conversation—and the collective effort towards more inclusive and effective climate action—continues.
